Haunted House - Before and After

The client was my teacher, Mrs. Robertson. My target audience was the students in another one of her classes, who would be judging to see who created the best haunted house. I used photoshop to create this piece. I focused on value and texture, so that I could create a spooky atmosphere with the shadings, and add effects to the house to make it seem older and more realistic. I learned that clipping masks are a helpful tool when changing the hues of a single image as opposed to the picture as a whole, and that blurring the edges after selecting an image helps it to blend in more with the background. I chose darker colors to stick with the haunted atmosphere. I had a bit of trouble in the beginning trying to select the trees, but color range proved very helpful in selecting each branch. I used masking a lot with the blurry brush, and I was able to make my house dirtier by adding specks of dust and dirt with a certain brush tool. TO improve on my design, I would add moon beams, smaller objects to lie in the front of the house (such as a pumpkin or tomb stone), add shadowy images behind some windows (like a hand or a child's face), and try to add more of a background to the house to add more depth to the picture.

Senior Powderpuff

The client was Bayside High School's senior powderpuff team. My target audience was the girls who would be playing in the powderpuff game who would wear shirts with the design on it. I used photoshop to create this piece. I tried to focus on the design element of color because I wanted to make something with Bayside's colors put together, along with the mascot of the school. I learned that Mrs. Spivey is sick and tired of seeing the bear and wanted to see a more creative spin on our shirts, such as a different model of a bear or its claws or even a different symbol altogether. I chose the color palette of teal, black, white, and silver because they are the school's colors. Once again, I had a hard time thinking of a creative logo, so in the end, my involved the same-old bear with not special slogans or text. To improve, next time I would use an original image for the main part of the shirt, as well as not use paint to create a crudely drawn image (ex. the bear's shirt). I would try to get rid of all that negative space my logo has.

Chorus Logo

The client was the chorus class at Bayside High School. My target audience was teenagers in high school and their adult instructor. I used Adobe Illustrator to create the piece. I focused on line so that I could connect the two words and let the logo flow together, as well as unity. I learned that it's bad to include too many parts on a logo if they aren't connected to each other in some way. The color pallete I used was black, teal, and silver because they are Bayside High School's colors. For the most part, I felt happy as I made this logo. I had wanted to implement a music symbol of some sort into the lettering, which I was able to do. If I had to improve on this logo, I would fix up the "B" in Bayside so that it is more distinct, and have the lone music note angled the same way as the words.

Fueling Kids Logo

The client was the Fueling Kids club. My target audience was comprised of children as well as the adult leaders of the club. I used Adobe Illustrator to create this piece. I attempted to focus on the design element of shapes and lines so that I could add an image into a similar-looking letter, and connect the two words with a single letter. I learned that I should try to avoid gradients when designing a logo, and that unity is very important when piecing everything together. I chose to base my colors off of the fruit I used in the logo, so i used green and red, as well as black to contrast with those bright colors. I rushed a little with this assignment, and had a hard time thinking of how to begin my logo. In the end, though, I decided to go with substituting a letter with a healthy food item, and changing the colors to go with it. Honestly, I should have tried to be a little more creative, and also to change the font used to a more appealing font. Rather than just a watermelon as a "D," I should have stuck to my previous design and worked from there.

Graffiti Collage

Since this was a class assignment, the client was my teacher. My target audience was teenagers around my age, as I was trying to advertise for the anti-bullying club SHOULDER in my graphic. I used Adobe Photoshop to create this piece. The design element I focused on was texture, because I wanted the brick wall to stand out against the graffiti art and seem realistic. I learned how to lower the opacity of a picture to allow it to blend in more and allow the background image to show through. I chose black for my picture so it would look more uniform, and a darker color like purple for the text so that it would match the darker brick wall. This assignment seemed pretty straightforward, and I was able to use color range to select the more prominent features of my face to put against the background image as well as lower the opacity of the text. I think I should use a different font if I were to do this assignment again, as well as choose a shorter message to place on the brick wall.
